Tierra del Sol for a rooftop breakfast in Oaxaca

Located beside Oaxaca’s Jardín Etnobotánico, Tierra del Sol specializes in traditional Mixteca ingredients and cooking techniques, led by executive chef and owner Olga Cabrera Oropeza.

If you’re staying at the Quinta Real Oaxaca (click for review), this Guide recommends taking a short walk to Tierra del Sol, a block away, to enjoy breakfast one morning on their rooftop terrace as the sun rises over the valley. Just make sure it’s not a weekend because you won’t want to miss the Quinta Real’s weekend breakfast buffet.

As is often the case, I was first to breakfast at Tierra del Sol the day I visited. The terrace is spacious. You can really relax there and enjoy that bottomless clay bowl of coffee. All breakfasts come with a bowl of fresh fruit and you can choose from coffee or chocolate con agua. Remember: chocolate is a breakfast food.

For the substantial portion of my breakfast, I had huaraches with chorizo on top, prepared on the comal–the wood-fire heated earthenware griddle you’ll walk past on the way up to the terrace. Huaraches are named after the sandals which look similar to their more oval shape than something like a memela, which would be round. See below:

Tierra del Sol opens for breakfast at 7:30 am every day of the week.

It is located at Reforma 411, Ruta Independencia, Centro, 68000 Oaxaca de Juárez

Although not the complete breakfast menu, below are three pages from Tierra del Sol’s breakfast menu as of January 2022. They’ll give you an idea of the prices and delicacies to expect.
